Positive Isolation adalah memastikan energy source completely disconnected secara fisik, tidak hanya switch off, sehingga equipment tidak bisa accidentally start during maintenance.
Types of Energy Requiring Isolation:
1. Electrical Energy
- Battery disconnect: Physical removal dari terminal atau use battery isolator switch
- Lock position: Prevent reconnection selama work
2. Hydraulic Energy
- Stored pressure: Bleed hydraulic system - operate controls setelah engine off untuk release pressure
- Hydraulic lines: Disconnect hoses jika work on pump/cylinder
3. Pneumatic Energy
- Air system: Release pressure dari tanks dan lines
- Valves: Close dan lock
4. Mechanical/Stored Energy
- Springs: Release tension atau block
- Gravitational: Lower boom/bucket ke ground, use support blocks untuk prevent fall
- Flywheels: Allow complete stop dan prevent rotation
5. Thermal Energy
- Hot components: Allow cooling period sebelum work
- Coolant system: Release pressure safely dari radiator
Isolation Procedure:
Step 1: Preparation
- Identify ALL energy sources untuk equipment
- Gather proper tools dan locks
- Notify all affected personnel
Step 2: Shutdown
- Normal shutdown procedure
- Park equipment di level ground
- Lower all attachments ke ground
- Set parking brake
Step 3: Isolate Energy Sources
- Electrical: Disconnect battery, remove key
- Hydraulic: Bleed pressure, lock valve
- Pneumatic: Release air pressure
- Mechanical: Block lifted components
Step 4: Lockout/Tagout
- Apply personal lock ke each isolation point
- Attach tag: "DO NOT OPERATE - Maintenance in Progress"
- Include name, date, reason
Step 5: Verification (Critical!)
- Test that equipment cannot start: Try start switch, operate controls
- Verify zero energy: Check gauges (pressure, voltage)
- Use multimeter untuk confirm electrical de-energized
Step 6: Perform Work Safely
Step 7: Restoration
- Remove tools dan verify work complete
- Remove blocks/supports
- Ensure all personnel clear
- Remove locks dan tags (ONLY by person who placed it)
- Reconnect energy sources
- Test equipment function sebelum release untuk operation
Critical Rules:
- NEVER remove someone else's lock - even supervisor
- Each worker applies own lock - group lockbox untuk multi-person work
- Verify isolation - don't assume
Inadequate isolation causes 10% of maintenance fatalities - never skip verification!
