Wildlife Hazards di Indonesia:

Mammals:

• Sun Bear, Beruang Madu: Agresif jika provoked atau dengan cubs
• Wild Boar, Babi Hutan: Charge jika cornered
• Macaque, Monyet: Aggressive troop, bite risk (rabies)
• Leopard: Rare encounter tapi dangerous

Reptiles:

• King Cobra: Highly venomous, aggressive when threatened
• Python: Constriction risk
• Viper species: Venomous, camouflaged
• Crocodile: Di area rawa, sungai

Insects:

• Hornet/wasp nest: Mass sting - life-threatening
• Fire ant: Painful bite, allergic reaction possible
• Centipede: Venomous bite

PRE-WORK PLANNING:

OPERATIONAL PRECAUTIONS:

General Awareness:

• Stay alert: Especially saat exit cabin, walk to equipment
• Make noise: Wildlife generally avoid human - talk, radio on
• Work in pairs: Buddy watch untuk each other
• Avoid dense vegetation: Stay on cleared path

Equipment Operation:

• Pre-op walk-around: Check untuk snake/animal hiding under equipment
• Cabin inspection: Snake bisa enter untuk warmth/shade
• Avoid overhanging branch: Snake, hornet nest di tree

Specific Protocols:

Snake Encounter:

• STOP movement - sudden move trigger strike
• Back away slowly - maintain 2+ meter distance
• Do NOT attempt kill/capture - most bite occur saat trying this
• Alert others via radio
• Mark location, avoid area

Large Mammal (Bear, Boar):

• Do NOT run - trigger chase instinct
• Back away slowly while facing animal
• Make yourself large - raise arms, open jacket
• Speak calmly, firmly - "Go away, bear"
• If charge:
• Bear - play dead (fetal position, protect neck)
• Boar - climb vehicle/structure

Insect Swarm (Hornet):

• RUN to shelter - cabin, vehicle
• Cover head/face dengan shirt
• Do NOT swat - aggravate further
• Jump into water jika available (hornet wait at surface - stay under)

Crocodile Area:

• NEVER enter water di known croc habitat
• Stay 5+ meter dari water edge
• No routine - croc learn pattern

AFTER BITE/STING:

Snake Bite Protocol:

1. CALM victim - panic increase venom spread
2. Immobilize bitten limb - splint jika possible
3. Apply pressure bandage - firm wrap dari bite upward (not tourniquet)
4. Keep limb below heart level
5. Remove jewelry dari affected limb - swelling akan terjadi
6. DO NOT:
• Cut wound atau suck venom - myth, tidak work
• Apply ice
• Give alcohol/caffeine
7. EVACUATE to hospital immediately - antivenom needed
8. Try identify snake (photo from safe distance) - help medical team select antivenom

Hornet/Wasp Sting (Multiple):

1. Remove stinger dengan scraping motion (don't pinch - squeeze more venom)
2. Wash dengan soap, water
3. Ice pack untuk reduce swelling
4. Antihistamine tablet
5. Monitor untuk allergic reaction:
• Difficulty breathing, wheezing
• Swelling tongue/throat
• Dizziness, rapid pulse
• If present - ANAPHYLAXIS, use EpiPen, call ambulance

Monkey Bite:

• Wash thoroughly - soap, running water 15 min
• Antiseptic
• Seek medical - rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) needed

PREVENTION MEASURES:

• Clear vegetation around work area - reduce hiding spot
• Proper waste disposal - food attract animal
• No feeding wildlife - habituate them to human
• Close cabin saat parked - prevent animal entry
• Boots gaiters untuk snake protection
