Confined Space adalah area dengan limited entry/exit, not designed for continuous occupancy, dengan potential atmospheric hazard atau engulfment risk.

Definisi Confined Space (Regulatory):

Berdasarkan Permenaker, confined space memiliki karakteristik:

• Space cukup besar untuk worker masuk dan perform task
• Akses terbatas untuk masuk/keluar
• Tidak designed untuk occupancy berkepanjangan

Examples Relevant untuk Heavy Equipment:

• Equipment-related:
• Large fuel tank (untuk inspection/cleaning)
• Hydraulic reservoir
• Cabin dengan access hatch closed
• Cargo box dari dump truck
• Work environment:
• Excavated pit/trench >1.5m depth
• Culvert atau drainage pipe
• Underground utility vault
• Silo, hopper, bin
• Tank atau vessel

Atmospheric Hazards:

1. Oxygen Deficiency (<19.5%)

• Caused by: Displacement oleh inert gas (nitrogen, CO2), consumption by rust/decay
• Effect: Unconsciousness, suffocation, death dalam minutes

2. Oxygen Enrichment (>23.5%)

• Caused by: Leaking oxygen line
• Effect: Fire/explosion risk - material ignite easily

3. Flammable Atmosphere

• Gases: Methane, propane dari fuel residue

4. Toxic Gases

Physical Hazards:

Confined Space Entry Procedure:

Step 1: Entry Permit

• Signed by authorized supervisor

Step 2: Hazard Assessment

• Rescue plan: Established sebelum entry
• Rescue team: On standby dengan equipment

Operator Role:

• Operator generally NOT enter confined space - ini specialist task
• If requested - verify permit dan controls in place
• Common scenario: Operator asked enter tank untuk cleaning - REFUSE if no permit!

Warning Signs:

If you observe these saat near confined space - DO NOT ENTER, evacuate area:

• Feeling dizzy, lightheaded
• Difficulty breathing
• Unusual odor
• Dead animals/insects near opening
• Visible vapor atau mist

Rescue DO NOT:

• NEVER attempt rescue tanpa proper equipment dan training
• 60% confined space fatalities adalah would-be rescuers
